Take Medications

Studies show that when you miss doses of your CML treatments or aren’t taking the right dose, your disease outcome is worse. Follow your doctor’s treatment instructions and stay on schedule. If you’re unsure about how to take your medication or you’re having problems with it, ask your doctor.

Eat Well

Eat Well

Take stock of your food choices to be sure you’re getting the nutrients you need. If you need help, ask your doctor or a nutritionist how to balance your diet to include lean protein, fruits, vegetables, dairy, and healthy fats. Eat with others at mealtimes to help you stick to a meal schedule and be social, which does your body good, too.

Keep Up Calorie Intake

Keep Up Calorie Intake

Nutrition isn’t only about hitting all the food groups. You’ve got to get enough calories every day. But sometimes, CML treatment can sap your appetite or make whole foods less appealing. To be sure you’re getting the calories you need, your doctor may suggest you drink your nutrition in the form of a high-calorie shake or canned liquid supplement.

Stay Hydrated

Stay Hydrated

Your body needs water to function. And CML treatment can leave you dehydrated. Keep a water bottle on hand and sip on it throughout the day. If plain water is hard for you to stomach, try adding lemon or other fruits for some flavor.

Exercise

Exercise

It’s important to move your body regularly. Exercise can help decrease bone pain, improve your sleep, and promote a healthy appetite. To keep yourself moving, find something you’ll look forward to doing every day, whether it’s dancing, yoga, swimming, or meeting a friend for a stroll outside.

Seek Support
6 / 10

Seek Support

It’s normal to be sad, scared, or anxious after a CML diagnosis. These feelings may seem more manageable if you talk to others about them. Lean on friends and family, but also consider support groups. They connect you with others who know what it’s like to live with CML.

Actively Relax

Actively Relax

Exercises that focus on breathing, slow and deliberate movements, or stillness get you into a more relaxed state. Try meditation, yoga, or guided imagery to calm both your mind and body.

Focus on Breathing

Focus on Breathing

One specific relaxation technique involves deep breathing. Besides reducing stress and anxiety, it can improve your endurance. Inhale for 5 seconds and fill up your chest with air. Exhale for 5 seconds while pulling your belly button toward your spine. Picture the tension and stress leaving your body as you do this.

Spend Energy Wisely

Spend Energy Wisely

Your energy is limited when you’re dealing with CML and its treatment. Be sure you use what you have on the things that are important to you. Be realistic about how much you can actually do in a day. Don’t ignore the signs that you’re tired. Give yourself a break when you need it.

Consider Complementary Therapies
10 / 10

Consider Complementary Therapies

Practices such as acupuncture, aromatherapy, massage, and hypnotherapy may add to your comfort and wellness as you go through your CML treatment. But always talk to your doctor before adding a complementary therapy to your routine.
