Overview: Empaveli (pegcetacoplan) helps regulate a part of your immune system called the complement system. It is used to reduce the destruction of red blood cells in people with paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH). Empaveli also helps lower protein levels in the urine for those with certain kidney conditions, specifically complement 3 glomerulopathy (C3G) or primary immune-complex membranoproliverative glomerulonephritis (IC-MPGN). Because Empaveli affects your immune system, there is a risk of serious and life-threatening infections. Your health care provider will likely recommend certain vaccinations before you start treatment. Be sure to discuss with them what vaccines you might need and how to best prevent infection.
Uses
What is Empaveli used for?
Empaveli (pegcetacoplan) is commonly used to treat the following conditions.
A blood disorder called paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH). People with PNH have a problem with their immune system that causes their body to attack and break down red blood cells. If too many red blood cells are destroyed, it can cause anemia.
A kidney disease called complement 3 glomerulopathy (C3G) or primary immune-complex membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (IC-MPGN) to lower protein levels in the urine (proteinuria)
Empaveli for Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria: What You Need to Know
Empaveli may also be used for other conditions as determined by your health care provider.
How does Empaveli work (mechanism of action)?
Empaveli binds to a protein called complement protein C3, a part of the immune system. Overactive complement protein C3 can result in kidney damage in patients with C3G and primary IC-MPGN and excess destruction of red blood cells in people with PNH. Empaveli regulates this overactivity which may prevent kidney damage and red blood cell destruction.
How is Empaveli supplied (dosage forms)?
Empaveli is available as a 1,080 mg/20 mL (54 mg/mL) solution for injection in a single-dose vial that is injected under the skin (subcutaneous).
How should I store Empaveli?
Store Empaveli in the refrigerator, between 36 F to 46 F (2 C to 8 C). Store Empaveli in the original carton to protect it from light.
