You might find it hard thinking about what to say to your child after a tough diagnosis. In the long run, though, honesty with your children can help them build important coping skills

It’s a fact of life that difficult things happen and people get sick. Your child may already be picking up on something before you decide how to talk about your diagnosis. Here are some things to consider, though:

  • How old are your children? Are they old enough to understand what you’re telling them? If so, give them more details to understand.
  • How can you maintain a sense of normalcy for your child when telling them difficult news?
  • Did you come up with a plan with your partner?
  • What was your child's reaction? Did they ask you questions or voice their concerns? Were they met with understanding and answers?

Let us know how you discussed your illness with your child, including whether you felt comfortable or challenged by talking openly with them. Share your response with the group and tag us on social media to keep the conversation going and help other parents.
