What are the serious side effects of Injectafer?

While less common, the most serious side effects of Injectafer are described below, along with what to do if they happen.

Increased Blood Pressure (Hypertension). Injectafer may increase your blood pressure or make it worse if you have a history of high blood pressure. Call your health care provider if your blood pressure increases while using this medicine.

If you measure your blood pressure and the top number (systolic) is 180 or higher or the bottom number (diastolic) is 120 or higher, get medical attention right away. Increases in blood pressure may not be noticeable, but look out for and tell your health care provider right away if you have any of the following symptoms of severely high blood pressure.

  • Sudden severe headache
  • Chest pain
  • Dizziness or confusion
  • Trouble breathing
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Blurry or other changes to vision
  • Anxiety
  • Buzzing in the ears
  • Nosebleed
  • Feeling of skipped heartbeats

Low Phosphate Levels. Injectafer can cause low levels of phosphate in your blood. This can sometimes be serious and may make your bones softer or more likely to break, especially if you have received multiple doses of Injectafer. Tell your health care provider right away if you notice any of the following symptoms of low phosphate levels.

  • Tiredness
  • Weak or sore muscles
  • Pain in bones or joints
  • Broken bones

Severe Allergic Reactions. Injectafer may cause allergic reactions, which can be life-threatening. After receiving an infusion of Injectafer, your health care provider will likely monitor you for at least 30 minutes to watch for signs of an allergic reaction. Get help right away if you have any of the following symptoms of a serious allergic reaction.

  • Breathing problems or wheezing
  • Racing heart
  • Fever or general ill feeling
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue, or throat
  • Trouble swallowing or throat tightness
  • Itching, skin rash, or pale red bumps on the skin called hives
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Dizziness, feeling lightheaded, or fainting
  • Stomach cramps
  • Joint pain

Who should not use Injectafer?

Allergies to Ingredients. People who are allergic to any of the following should not use Injectafer.

  • Ferric carboxymaltose
  • Injectafer
  • Any of the ingredients in the specific product dispensed

What should I know about Injectafer before using it?

Injectafer is usually given by a health care provider in a hospital or clinic. It will be injected into your veins. After each dose, your health care provider will likely monitor you for at least 30 minutes to watch for an allergic reaction.

Your health care provider will likely check your iron and phosphate levels before starting Injectafer and while you are using it. This is to monitor your treatment and make sure the medicine is safe and working.

Injectafer can interfere with certain lab test results. If you are having lab tests done, tell your health care providers if you had a dose of Injectafer in the past 24 hours.

Injectafer can affect your alertness or coordination. Do not drive or do other activities that require alertness or coordination until you know how Injectafer affects you.

What should I tell my health care provider before using Injectafer?

Tell your health care provider about all of your health conditions and any prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, vitamins/minerals, herbal products, and other supplements you are using. This will help them know if Injectafer is right for you.

In particular, make sure that you discuss any of the following.

Current and Past Health Conditions. Tell your health care provider if you have any of the following.

  • Stomach problems, including inflammatory bowel disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Low levels of vitamin D
  • High levels of parathyroid hormone
  • Trouble absorbing vitamins or phosphorus
  • Used Injectafer in the past

Pregnancy. It is not known if or how Injectafer could affect pregnancy or harm a fetus. If you have a serious allergic reaction to Injectafer, this may cause harm to a fetus. Tell your health care provider if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Your health care provider will let you know if you should use Injectafer while you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant.

Breastfeeding. Injectafer passes into breast milk. Tell your health care provider if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. Your health care provider will let you know if you should use Injectafer while breastfeeding.
