Overview: Doptelet is used to increase platelet levels in certain people with low levels. It works by signaling the body to make more platelets. The most common side effects are headache, tiredness, and infection in the nose or throat, sore throat, or common cold symptoms. It is important to keep all appointments for blood work and other tests while taking Doptelet. Make sure that you take the dosage form your health care provider prescribed. The tablets and capsules cannot be substituted for each other.

What is Doptelet used for?

Doptelet (avatrombopag) is commonly used to treat certain people with low platelet levels (thrombocytopenia) caused by certain conditions, such as chronic immune thrombocytopenia.

Doptelet may also be used for other conditions as determined by your health care provider.

How does Doptelet work (mechanism of action)?

Doptelet signals the body to make more platelets, which are cells that help the blood to clot. In certain people with low platelet levels, Doptelet helps to increase the number of platelets in the body.

How should I store Doptelet?

Doptelet should be stored at room temperature, between 68 F to 77 F (20 C to 25 C). It can be exposed to temperatures between 59 F to 86 F (15 C to 30 C) for shorter periods of time, such as when transporting it. Store in a cool, dry place. Do not remove tablets from blister packs until ready to take.

What are the most common side effects of Doptelet?

The most common side effects of Doptelet are listed below. These side effects may vary depending on the condition that is being treated. Tell your health care provider if you have any of these side effects that bother you.

  • Headache
  • Tiredness
  • Bruising
  • Nosebleed
  • Infection in the nose or throat, sore throat, runny nose, or common cold symptoms
  • Joint pain
  • Bleeding gums
  • Purple or red spots on the skin
  • Fever
  • Stomach pain
  • Nausea
  • Swelling in the hands and feet (edema)

What are the serious side effects of Doptelet?

While less common, the most serious side effects of Doptelet are described below, along with what to do if they happen.

Severe Allergic Reactions. Doptelet may cause allergic reactions, which can be serious. Stop taking Doptelet and get help right away if you have any of the following symptoms of a serious allergic reaction.

  • Breathing problems or wheezing
  • Racing heart
  • Fever or general ill feeling
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue, or throat
  • Trouble swallowing or throat tightness
  • Itching or skin rash 
  • Bumps on the skin called hives that can be red, pink, white, or brown depending on your skin tone
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Dizziness, feeling lightheaded, or fainting
  • Stomach cramps
  • Joint pain

Blood Clots. Doptelet may cause blood clots in your arteries or veins, including a blood clot in the lungs (pulmonary embolism), the legs (deep venous thrombosis, or DVT), or the liver (portal vein thrombosis). This risk may be higher in people who have certain health conditions. Stop taking Doptelet and get emergency help if you have any of the following signs of these blood clots. 

  • Chest pain or pressure
  • Fast or abnormal heartbeat
  • Trouble breathing
  • Stomach pain or tenderness
  • Pain, swelling, or tenderness in your arm or leg

Who should not use Doptelet?

Allergies to Ingredients. People who are allergic to any of the following should not take Doptelet.

  • Avatrombopag
  • Doptelet
  • Doptelet Sprinkle
  • Any of the ingredients in the specific product dispensed

What should I know about Doptelet before using it?

Do not take Doptelet unless it has been prescribed to you by a healthcare provider. Take it as prescribed.

Do not share Doptelet with other people, even if they have the same condition as you. It may harm them.

Keep Doptelet out of the reach of children.

Your health care provider may monitor your platelet levels while you are taking Doptelet. Keep all appointments for blood work and other tests.

This medicine is available in different dosage forms. Make sure that you have the form that your health care provider has prescribed for you. The tablets and capsules are not the same and cannot be substituted for each other. Ask your health care provider if you have any questions.

Do not swallow the capsule. The capsule needs to be opened and the granules sprinkled onto a small amount of liquid or soft food that you will swallow right away. Examples of soft foods are applesauce, yogurt, and strawberry jelly. Do not chew or crush the granules. 

What should I tell my healthcare provider before using Doptelet?

Tell your health care provider about all of your health conditions and any prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, vitamins/minerals, herbal products, and other supplements you are using. This will help them determine if Doptelet is right for you.

In particular, make sure that you discuss any of the following.

Clotting Problems. Let your health care provider know if you have any conditions that increase your risk for blood clots. Some examples include Factor V Leidin, antithrombin deficiency, Protein C or S deficiency, and antiphospholipid syndrome.

Other Medicines and Supplements. Doptelet may interact with other medicines and supplements. Before taking Doptelet, tell your health care provider about any prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, vitamins/minerals, herbal products, and other supplements you are using. See the Interactions section for more details.

Pregnancy. Doptelet may cause harm to an unborn baby. Tell your health care provider if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. 

Breastfeeding. It is not known if Doptelet passes into breast milk. Tell your health care provider if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. Do not breastfeed while taking Doptelet and for at least two weeks after stopping this medicine. Your health care provider can help you with the best way to feed your baby during this time.

Interactions

Does Doptelet interact with foods or drinks?

There are no known interactions between Doptelet and foods or drinks. Each dose of Doptelet should be taken with food.

It is unknown if drinking alcohol will affect Doptelet, but low platelet levels can increase your risk of bleeding. Since alcohol can also increase your risk of bleeding, it is best to limit the amount of alcohol you drink.

Does Doptelet interact with other medicines (drug interactions)?

Always tell your health care provider about any prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, vitamins/minerals, herbal products, and other supplements you are using.

In particular, make sure that you discuss if you are using any of the following before taking Doptelet.

  • Fluconazole (Diflucan), which is a medicine used for fungal infections
  • Rifampin (Rifadin), which is a medicine commonly used to treat an infection called tuberculosis
  • Ritonavir (Norvir), which is a medicine commonly used to treat HIV

Many other medicines may alter the blood levels of Doptelet. Tell your health care provider about all medicines that you take or have recently taken.

Overdose/Missed Dose

What should I do if I accidentally use too much Doptelet?

If you or someone else has used too much Doptelet, get medical help right away, call 911, or contact a Poison Control center at 800-222-1222.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Doptelet?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and only take the next dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

If you miss a dose of Doptelet before a scheduled medical or dental procedure, tell your health care provider.
