What is Vyvgart used for?

Vyvgart (efgartigimod alfa-fcab) is commonly used to treat generalized myasthenia gravis (MG).

How does Vyvgart work (mechanism of action)?

Vyvgart works by binding to certain receptors in the body, called neonatal Fc receptors (FcRn). Binding to these receptors helps lower the amount of certain proteins in the blood called immunoglobulin G (IgG). Immunoglobulins are part of your immune system. By doing this, Vyvgart helps slow down the worsening of weakness in the arms and legs. 

How is Vyvgart supplied (dosage forms)?

Vyvgart is available in an injectable form that is given by a healthcare provider.

How should I store Vyvgart?

Vyvgart is usually given by a healthcare provider in a hospital or clinic. You will not store it at home.

Side Effects

What are the most common side effects of Vyvgart?

The most common side effects of Vyvgart are listed below. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any of these side effects that bother you.

  • Infection in the nose or throat, sore throat, or common cold symptoms
  • Headache
  • Kidney or bladder infection

What are the serious side effects of Vyvgart?

While less common, the most serious side effects of Vyvgart are described below, along with what to do if they happen.

Severe Allergic Reactions. Vyvgart may cause allergic reactions, which can be serious. Stop using Vyvgart and get help right away if you have any of the following symptoms of a serious allergic reaction.

  • Breathing problems or wheezing
  • Racing heart
  • Fever or general ill feeling
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue, or throat
  • Trouble swallowing or throat tightness
  • Itching, skin rash, or pale red bumps on the skin called hives
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Dizziness, feeling lightheaded, or fainting
  • Stomach cramps
  • Joint pain
  • Low blood pressure

Infection. Vyvgart can increase the risk of infections, including serious infections. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have an infection or any of the following symptoms.

  • Burning or stinging when you pee
  • Cough or coughing up blood
  • Fever, sweats, chills, or muscle aches
  • Sore throat
  • Runny nose or stuffy nose
  • Shortness of breath
  • Diarrhea or stomach pain
  • Weight loss

Infusion Reactions. Vyvgart can cause reactions that can be serious when it is given to you. Your infusion may need to be slowed or stopped if you have these reactions. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you have any of the following symptoms when you get your infusion.

  • High blood pressure or chest pain
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Fever or chills
  • Stomach, back, joint, or muscle pain
  • Redness of your face and neck
  • Trouble breathing
  • Hives

Warnings & Precautions

Who should not use Vyvgart?

Allergies to Ingredients. People who are allergic to any of the following should not use Vyvgart.

  • Efgartigimod alfa-fcab
  • Efgartigimod alfa
  • Vyvgart
  • Any of the ingredients in the specific product dispensed

What should I know about Vyvgart before using it?

Do not use Vyvgart unless it has been prescribed to you by a healthcare provider. Your healthcare provider will store and give you the medicine.

Vyvgart will be given to you by your healthcare provider as an infusion through your vein over a period of time. Your healthcare provider may also tell you to take certain medicines before you receive Vyvgart. These medicines can help to prevent infusion-related side effects.

Keep all appointments to check your lab work. This will help your healthcare provider monitor you for certain side effects.

What should I tell my healthcare provider before using Vyvgart?

Tell your healthcare provider about all of your health conditions and any prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, vitamins/minerals, herbal products, and other supplements you are using. This will help them determine if Vyvgart is right for you.

In particular, make sure that you discuss any of the following.

Vaccines. Talk with your healthcare provider about any vaccines that you may need. You should not receive certain vaccines right before or while using Vyvgart. Tell your healthcare provider about any vaccines you have recently received or have scheduled.

Other Medicines and Supplements. Vyvgart may interact with other medicines and supplements. Before using Vyvgart, tell your healthcare provider about any prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, vitamins/minerals, herbal products, and other supplements you are using. See the Interactions section for more details.

Pregnancy. It is not known if or how Vyvgart could affect pregnancy or harm an unborn baby. Tell your healthcare provider if you are or plan to become pregnant. Your healthcare provider will advise you if you should receive Vyvgart while you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant. If you become pregnant while taking Vyvgart, you can register with the Vyvgart Pregnancy Study by calling 855-272-6524 or at www.Vyvgartpregnancy.com. This registry collects safety information about the use of Vyvgart during pregnancy.

Breastfeeding. Vyvgart passes into breast milk. Tell your healthcare provider if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. Your healthcare provider will advise you if you should receive Vyvgart while breastfeeding.

Does Vyvgart interact with foods or drinks?

There are no known interactions between Vyvgart and food or drinks.

Does Vyvgart interact with other medicines (drug interactions)?

Vyvgart may interact with certain medicines. Always tell your healthcare provider about any prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, vitamins/minerals, herbal products, or other supplements you are using.

In particular, make sure that you discuss if you have received any medicine known as an immunoglobulin,  monoclonal antibody, or products made from antibodies.

What should I do if I accidentally use too much Vyvgart?

If you or someone else has used too much Vyvgart, get medical help right away, call 911, or contact a Poison Control center at 800-222-1222.

Vyvgart is usually given by a healthcare provider in a hospital. Your healthcare provider will make sure you are receiving Vyvgart as scheduled.
