Alavert products are commonly used to treat allergy symptoms and congestion. This can include itchy or watery eyes, itchy or runny nose, sneezing, itchy throat, congestion in your nose, and sinus pressure.

The main active ingredient in all Alavert products is loratadine Loratadine is an antihistamine that blocks the effects of a chemical called histamine, which causes allergy symptoms that affect your eyes, nose, and throat. There is another Alavert product that also contains the active ingredient pseudoephedrine. Pseudoephedrine is a decongestant that works to narrow your blood vessels. This lowers swelling, inflammation, and congestion in your nose, allowing you to breathe better and helps drain your sinuses, leading to less sinus pressure.

There are Alavert products for adults and children as young as 6 years old.

Do not take more than the recommended dose of Alavert. Taking more Alavert than as directed may cause you to feel drowsy. The dissolvable tablets can be taken with or without water. The non-dissolvable tablets must be swallowed whole without being crushed, chewed, dissolved, or split.

Alavert products that contain the ingredient pseudoephedrine should not be taken if you are taking a type of medicine called a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), or within 2 weeks of stopping the MAOI. A MAOI is usually used to treat depression and Parkinson’s disease. If you do not know if your prescription medicine contains an MAOI, ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist before taking an Alavert product.

Check with a healthcare provider before taking any Alavert products if you have any of the following conditions.

  • Kidney or liver problems
  • Heart problems
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Thyroid problems
  • Trouble peeing, if you have problems with your prostate
  • Pregnant or breast-feeding

There may be side effects, additional warnings, and interactions with other medicines that are not listed here. These may vary depending on the combination of ingredients in the specific Alavert product you are using. Always check the label before taking any Alavert product. Talk to a pharmacist or healthcare provider about your health conditions and other medicines to help determine which Alavert products are safe for you.
