What do Allegra products treat?
Allegra products are commonly used to treat allergy symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, itchy/watery eyes, itchy nose or throat, hives, nasal congestion, and sinus pressure. The main active ingredient in all Allegra products for allergy symptoms is an antihistamine called fexofenadine. Fexofenadine works to block a substance in your body called histamine.
Some Allegra products may also contain a decongestant called pseudoephedrine. Pseudoephedrine works to shrink blood vessels in your nose and sinuses, which helps with congestion and stuffiness.
There are Allegra products for adults and children as young as 2 years old.
What should I know before using Allegra products?
Read the label of the Allegra product you take to make sure you are not allergic to any of its ingredients. Take Allegra as directed and do not take more than the recommended dose. Allegra products are nondrowsy, meaning they should not cause you to feel sleepy or tired. Avoid drinking fruit juices while taking any Allegra product. It is also not recommended to take aluminum or magnesium antacids at the same time as taking any Allegra product. This can cause Allegra to not work as well. Talk to your health care provider if you have kidney disease before taking any Allegra product. If you are 65 years or older, check with your health care provider before taking any Allegra product.
If you are taking an Allegra-D product, these medicines contain pseudoephedrine. Allegra-D products should not be used if you are taking a medicine called a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) or for two weeks after stopping the MAOI. An MAOI is a medicine usually used for depression or Parkinson’s disease. If you do not know if your prescription medicine contains an MAOI, ask your health care provider or pharmacist before using an Allegra-D product. You may notice the coating of a tablet in your poop while taking an Allegra-D product. This is normal. If your symptoms do not improve within seven days or you develop a fever while taking Allegra-D, stop taking Allegra-D and call your health care provider.
Check with a health care provider before taking an Allegra-D product if you have any of the following conditions.
- Heart disease
- Thyroid disease
- Glaucoma
- High blood pressure
- Diabetes
- Trouble peeing, if you have problems with your prostate
There is an Allegra product that is used to help with hives. If you have hives that do not itch, are an unusual color, or look bruised or blistered, talk to your health care provider before taking an Allegra product for hives. If your hives symptoms have not improved after three days of treatment or your hives have lasted for six weeks or more, stop taking Allegra for hives and call your health care provider.
There may be side effects, additional warnings, and interactions with other medicines that are not listed here. These may vary depending on the combination of ingredients in the specific Allegra product you are using. Always check the label before taking any Allegra product. Talk to a pharmacist or health care provider about your health conditions and other medicines to help determine which Allegra products are safe for you.
