Mederma products can help visibly reduce the appearance of scars. This can include scars caused by acne, surgery, burns, or injury. The main active ingredients in most Mederma products are allantoin or dimethicone. Allantoin and dimethicone work to form a protective layer to help lock in moisture and protect against irritants. Allantoin can also work to help support the growth of new skin cells.

There is a Mederma sunscreen product that also contains the following ingredients to help with sun protection, which may help lower the risk of sun damage and darkening of scars.

  • Avobenzone
  • Octocrylene
  • Oxybenzone

There are Mederma products for adults and children as young as 6 months old.

Do not apply Mederma products on damaged or broken skin, including deep or puncture wounds, animal bites, or serious burns. Do not apply Mederma products on stitches, wait until the stitches have been removed. If you are planning on using Mederma products on scabs, make sure the scab has come off naturally before using Mederma products.

Mederma products are meant to be used outside of your body. Do not get it into your eyes. If Mederma products are swallowed, get emergency help or call a Poison Control Center right away.

Stop using Mederma products if your symptoms get worse, do not get better after seven days, or clear up and come back again within a few days.

Look at the label of the specific Mederma product you are using to make sure you are not allergic to any of its ingredients.

There may be side effects, additional warnings, and interactions with other medicines that are not listed here.
