Retaine products are used to treat dry, itchy, and irritated eyes. They include eye drops and eye ointments that act like artificial tears to help your eyes feel better.

Retaine products are use different main ingredients to focus on different eye problems.

  • For Dryness and Irritation: Most Retaine drops contain an eye lubricant (like carboxymethylcellulose, mineral oil, or petrolatum). This lubricant helps keep your eyes moist, just like real tears. Some products use an emollient (like light mineral oil) to help the moisture last longer.
  • For Itchy Allergies: One product, Retaine Allergy Itch Relief, contains an antihistamine (olopatadine). This medicine blocks a substance called histamine in your body, which is what causes the itchiness from eye allergies.
  • For General Eye Health: There are also Retaine products you can take by mouth (oral supplements). These contain vitamins and minerals that may help support the health of your eyes.

Retaine products are generally safe to use. Side effects may include irritation, burning, stinging of the eye, or blurry vision.

Stop using the medicine if you develop a rash or hives. Get medical help right away if you have signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as trouble breathing or swelling of the face, lips, or throat.

Some Retaine products come as single-dose vials, which you use once and throw away later. Others come in a bottle that you keep using until the bottle is finished/expired. Read the directions for the Retaine product you are using to make sure you are using it correctly.

Do not use Retaine products if they change color. When using Retain eye drops or eye ointment, do not touch the tip of the product to any surface. This may help prevent contamination or an eye infection. Stop using Retaine if you have eye pain, changes in vision, continued redness or irritation, if your eye condition worsens, or if your symptoms last 72 hours or more. If you are using Retaine Allergy Itch Relief Eye Drops, take your contacts out before using the medicine.

There may be side effects, additional warnings, and interactions with other medicines that are not listed here. These may vary depending on the combination of ingredients in the specific Retaine product you are using. Always check the label before taking any over-the-counter medicine. Do not use more than the recommended dose. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about your health conditions and other medicines to help determine which products are safe for you.
