Tucks products are usually used to help relieve hemorrhoid symptoms. Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in your rectum and anus. Sometimes, the veins in this area swell or stretch so much that they bulge and can cause burning, discomfort, itching, and pain, especially when you poop.

Tucks products contain different active ingredients that are applied to the skin, which are listed below.

  • A topical protectant (glycerin, petrolatum), which helps soothe, moisturize, and form a barrier on your skin to protect it from irritants and wetness
  • A topical astringent (witch hazel), which may help reduce swelling and soothe irritation by causing the skin to shrink
  • A topical vasoconstrictor (phenylephrine), which helps reduce swelling and irritation by constricting blood vessels where it is applied
  • A topical anesthetic (lidocaine or pramoxine), which blocks nerve signals that cause you to itch or feel pain

Tucks products come as a wipe and two different creams. All Tucks products are for adults and children as young as 12 years old.

Side effects may vary depending on the ingredients in the specific product you are using. Tucks products are usually well tolerated, but some people may have mild and temporary irritation, burning, stinging, or dryness where the product is applied.

Stop using the medicine if you develop a rash or hives. Get medical help right away if you have signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as trouble breathing or swelling of the face, lips, or throat.

Tucks products are for external use only. Stop using any Tucks product if you have any of the following.

  • Bleeding in the area where you are using the Tucks product, such as rectal bleeding
  • If your hemorrhoid symptoms get worse instead of better or do not improve within seven days or you have other new symptoms

Product With Phenylephrine. One Tucks product contains phenylephrine (see the chart below). If a product has phenylephrine, it may affect blood vessels other than the ones involved with your hemorrhoids. This may cause problems if you have certain other health conditions. Talk to your health care provider before using a Tucks product with phenylephrine if you have heart disease, high blood pressure (or take medicines for it), thyroid disease, diabetes, or trouble peeing due to an enlarged prostate gland or take medicine for depression. Also talk to a health care provider before using this product if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

There may be side effects, additional warnings, and interactions with other medicines that are not listed here. These may vary depending on the combination of ingredients in the specific Tucks product you are using. Always check the label before taking any over-the-counter medicine. Do not use more than the recommended dose. Talk to your health care provider or pharmacist about your health conditions and other medicines to help determine which products are safe for you.
