Understanding Ulcerative Colitis

Ulcerative Colitis Outcomes
If you have ulcerative colitis, your life expectancy is pretty much the same as someone without it. But there are some cancer risks and complications that could be life-threatening. This makes it important to understand your symptoms and get the right medical care.

Your Risk of Colon Cancer
People with ulcerative colitis have a higher risk of getting colon cancer, especially if you have had the disease for over eight years or if your symptoms are not well controlled. You're also at risk if you're male or have ongoing inflammation, liver conditions, and a family history of colon cancer.

Other Complications
Ulcerative colitis can lead to many complications. These include bleeding from intestinal ulcers, dehydration, nutrient loss, joint inflammation, eye problems, skin issues, and even a perforated bowel. Toxic megacolon is a rare but life-threatening condition that requires immediate medical attention.

Symptoms and Flares
Ulcerative colitis often causes flares of symptoms like diarrhea, abdominal pain, and bleeding. Although they're not life-threatening, if left unchecked, they can lead to complications that are. Make sure you tell your doctor about your symptoms. They may suggest anti-inflammatory medications, diet changes, and sometimes surgery if they're severe enough.

Staying Healthy With Ulcerative Colitis
Continuing treatment is critical even when you're not having a flare-up. Make sure to visit your doctor regularly and take your medications. A balanced diet and exercise are also important. You should get colon cancer screenings every one to three years.
