Why Is Ulcerative Colitis Medication Important?

Why Is Ulcerative Colitis Medication Important?
People with ulcerative colitis take medication to help control inflammation in their colon and rectum. Stopping medication can cause flare-ups, with symptoms like diarrhea, urgent bowel movements, weight loss, and abdominal pain. Leaving your inflammation unchecked can also lead to holes or swelling in your colon.

Withdrawal Symptoms and Effectiveness
When you suddenly stop your medication, it can cause withdrawal symptoms like fatigue and joint pain. If you decide to restart them, it can make them less effective, especially if you're taking biologic therapies.

Increased Cancer Risk
People with ulcerative colitis already have a higher risk for colorectal cancer. Because chronic inflammation can damage your DNA, getting off your medication can worsen these odds.

Why Stop Treatment?
Many people on ulcerative colitis medications experience side effects or can't afford to continue treatment. Although there are many reasons to stop treatment, it’s important to stay consistent with your medication until you talk to your doctor to avoid any health issues.

When to Talk to Your Doctor
Talk to your doctor if you're thinking of stopping your ulcerative colitis treatment. They can explain your choices and find a safe option. If you decide to get off your medication, you'll need regular blood tests and endoscopies to monitor your health.
