Migraines are strong headaches that usually cause painful throbbing or pulsing to one side of the head. They typically surface with one or more symptoms, including light and sound sensitivity, nausea, and vomiting.
Stress, fluctuating hormones, sleep patterns, weather changes, strong smells, extreme physical exertion, and flashing bright lights often trigger a migraine, and so does consuming certain foods and drinks. Migraine-inducing foods and drinks include:
- Fresh baked yeast goods, like sourdough bread, donuts, and cakes
- Aged cheeses, like gorgonzola, parmesan, and brie
- Processed foods, such as canned soups, deli meat, and bacon
- Potato chips and salty, processed foods
- Pizza or tomato-based products
- Dairy products
- Artificial sweeteners, preservatives, and food additives
- Coffee and other caffeinated drinks
- Wine, scotch, champagne, and other types of alcohol
By avoiding these foods and drinks, you'll reduce the odds of triggering a strong migraine as well as any discomfort it brings. Be aware that skipping meals can also trigger migraines, so make sure you eat at least three hearty, healthy meals daily with light snacks in between.
