Nurtec ODT (rimegepant) is a new treatment approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in May 2021. This is the first oral treatment option to treat acute migraine attacks, though the FDA also approved the drug for preventive treatment. Its approval is groundbreaking for migraine treatment.
Nurtec ODT is used to treat acute migraine headaches and prevent episodic migraine headaches. It treats migraine pain specifically and won’t relieve pain from other ailments. You should take this medication when acetaminophen, aspirin, and other pain relievers don’t do the job. Your doctor must give you a prescription for Nurtec ODT as it’s not available over the counter.
Some medical conditions may interfere with Nurtec ODT. Talk to your doctor if you have the following:
- End-stage kidney disease
- Severe liver disease
Side effects of Nurtec ODT aren’t very common. However, like most medications, there are some that you should look out for. These less common side effects include:
- Sour stomach
- Belching
- Heartburn
- Indigestion
- Nausea
- Stomach pain
There are also some rare side effects that include:
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Fever
- Hives or rash
- Reddening of the skin, especially around your ears
- Swelling of your eyes, face, or the inside of your nose
- Unusual fatigue
The FDA has approved a 75 mg dosage of Nurtec ODT to treat migraines. You shouldn't exceed this dosage within a 24-hour period. There’s also minimal information about the safety of taking more than 18 doses within one month. For migraine prevention, the recommended dosage is 75 mg every other day.
When starting Nurtec ODT, you should keep an eye out for certain hypersensitivity reactions. If you develop a rash right after taking the drug or within a day or so after, contact your doctor immediately and stop using the medication.
