Staying ahead of chronic migraines means understanding your triggers. When the pain in your head is triggered by weather events like rising temperatures, pressure changes, or storms, it can be hard to avoid. While you can’t change the weather, you can take precautions and prepare for certain weather changes.

Keeping track of the weather and avoiding time outside during dramatic weather shifts could help prevent triggering a migraine.

However, it may be hard to tell at first if the weather causes your migraines. If you notice a pattern, you can talk to your doctor. They’ll be able to guide you through identifying your triggers. Here’s a checklist for tracking migraines against the weather:

  1. Do your shoulders and neck get tense in cold weather that could lead to migraine?
  2. Do bright summer days or light reflecting on snow cause extra strain on your eyes?
  3. Do you feel like your migraines are more frequent when you’re outside in more polluted areas?
  4. Do you feel dehydrated in dry heat?
