Managing Work With Chronic Migraine

Managing Work With Chronic Migraine
Chronic migraine involves 15 or more headache days per month, with symptoms such as fatigue and nausea. It's often misunderstood as just a "bad headache," but its impact on daily life and work can be significant.

Importance of Self-Advocacy
Speak up for yourself at work by explaining your condition. This can help prevent misunderstandings about your performance and get the support you need, such as dimming lights, noise-canceling headphones, an ergonomic chair for your desk, or a more flexible work schedule.

Effective Communication With Employers
When discussing migraine with your supervisor, focus on how accommodations can help you remain productive rather than dwelling on limitations. Come prepared with specific suggestions that would help you manage your condition at work.

Prepare for Migraine Days
Create an emergency migraine kit for your workplace with any rescue medications, dark sunglasses, earplugs, water, and quick snacks. Having these items readily available can help you manage symptoms that start during work hours.

Legal Rights and Protections
Chronic migraine can qualify as a disability under the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA), allowing for reasonable workplace accommodations. This means you can request reasonable accommodations that help you perform your job without causing undue hardship to your employer. The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) may also provide up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave.

Disability Benefits
For those severely affected by chronic migraine, applying for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) may be an option. Keep detailed records of your symptoms and work impact to support your application.
