Eczema is an itchy skin condition that affects 10% of children worldwide. The two most important steps to treating eczema are sticking to a consistent moisturizing routine and avoiding the items and situations that trigger your child’s eczema.

Many different factors can cause eczema flare-ups. Find out exactly what triggers your child’s eczema so you can remove or treat the cause. Common triggers include:

  • Cosmetics
  • Soaps
  • Detergents
  • Clothes
  • Pollen
  • Animals
  • Food
  • Other Allergens
  • Cleaning products
  • Dry winter air
  • Sweat
  • Saliva

In general, products that include fragrances and colorful additives can be strong triggers for eczema. Try to find colorless, fragrance-free products to use on your child’s skin, clothes, and bedding.

In 30% of all cases of childhood eczema, your kid will also develop a food allergy. But testing for food allergies isn’t always recommended because it leads to a lot of false-positive results. This could cause you to unnecessarily limit your child’s diet. Talk to your doctor if you suspect that your child’s eczema is connected to a specific allergen.
