Chrissy Teigan, the supermodel and television personality, knows what it’s like to handle a difficult skin condition. Her young daughter, Luna, has had eczema throughout her childhood, and her mom has learned how to cope with the ins and outs of the condition.
Teigan first broke the news in a 2016 Instagram post that showed little Luna with her cheeks bright red from eczema. The National Eczema Association says that 10% of all babies develop eczema, which is characterized by an itchy red rash and inflammation. It’s commonly seen on babies’ faces, just like Luna’s cheeks.
The original diagnosis would have led to a number of changes in Teigan’s routine, including cutting out any products that were scented or otherwise irritating to the baby’s skin. Each case of eczema has different triggers that are unique to the affected person.
Hot baths are other things that go out the window when a baby is diagnosed with eczema. And the key to treatment is to keep your baby’s skin moist. You have to learn to incorporate moisturizer into your baby's bath routine and find a brand that works for you. Finding all the right products, from non-irritating laundry detergent to moisturizers, is one of the more difficult tasks in a market that’s flooded with scented and colorful additives.
But, by all appearances, the supermodel has adapted well to this added child-rearing hurdle. In a 2018 episode of “Donna Off-Air”, Teigan revealed the contents of her diaper bag, which included a type of fragrance-free wipe that she said she frequently uses to clean her daughter’s face.
Although eczema tends to clear up later in childhood, those who suffered from childhood eczema can remain very sensitive to old triggers. This means that Chrissy and Luna are committed to choosing safe, fragrance-free products for years to come.
