Do You Call It Eczema or Atopic Dermatitis?

If you tell someone you have eczema, chances are they know what you mean. When you were originally diagnosed, though, your doctor probably used a different term for the itchy skin condition. Officially, you have atopic dermatitis.

The difference between what regular people call a medical condition and the way doctors describe it may not seem like that big a deal. It can become an issue, however, when you're trying to find information. You might find yourself skipping sites that talk about eczema if the only phrase you've heard is atopic dermatitis. Likewise, you might not read news about atopic dermatitis if you think eczema is the only name for your rash.

We'd love to know how you talk about this common skin condition. Do you say atopic dermatitis, or do you say eczema? When did you learn that both terms are used for the same condition? Do you find it confusing to switch between different names for skin conditions?
