Safe Sun Exposure with Moderate to Severe Psoriasis

Benefit of Sunlight for Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a chronic condition that causes skin cells to multiply faster than normal. This overgrowth creates plaque and scales on your skin. Ultraviolet light helps clear psoriasis patches.

Why Does Sunlight Help Psoriasis?
Sunlight slows down the production of skin cells and calms the immune system, which can reduce psoriasis symptoms. Sunlight also provides vitamin D, an essential nutrient that support overall skin health.

Other Benefits of Sunlight
Studies suggest a daily dose of sunlight can cut stress, which is one of the most common triggers of psoriasis. It may also help regulate sleep and improve your overall mood and mental health.

Starting Sun Exposure
Begin with 5 minutes of sun exposure, gradually increasing to 30 minutes a day. The best time for sun exposure is between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. This gradual approach helps your skin adapt to the sun safely.

Use Sunscreen
It may seem odd, but even when your goal is to soak up the sun's healing rays, you still need sunscreen. Apply sunscreen made for sensitive skin with SPF 30 or higher. Sunscreen prevents sunburn as well as signs of aging, such as wrinkles or sunspots. Don’t put sunscreen on broken or actively flaring skin.

Consider Your Medications
Some medications can increase your sensitivity to sunlight. Methotrexate, a drug that calms your immune system and one that some people take for psoriasis, is one of them. Talk to your doctor before starting sun therapy to ensure it's safe with your current medications.
